Ultrasonic-assisted rapid cold welding of bulk metallic glasses

Glass-forming ability is a long-standing concern in the field of metallic glasses (MGs), which greatly limits their maximum casting size and extensive applications. In this work, we report an ultrasonic-assisted rapid cold welding bulk MGs without using any additives. with various compositions are welded together under 20,000-Hz high-frequency ultrasonic vibration losing amorphous nature. The technology offers advantages bonding (< 1 s) at low temperature (near room temperature) stress MPa). According to phenomenon observed experiment, activated fresh atoms diffuse through broken channel port continuous rupture oxide layer, accelerates atomic-diffusion process. Finally, stable MG interface realized. This universal process can realize composition design dissimilar as well tuning new materials performance.
